2020 Will Be The Year Of Electric Vehicles

Goodbye petrol Jaguars.

Jaguar has announced that from 2020 all of its cars will be fully electrified or hybrids. Take that, petrol! Bring on electric vehicles.

The news isn’t quite as transformative as some eco-worriers might have hoped: The company will still produce petrol-engined versions of its vehicles too… but at least having a hybrid option is a step in the right direction.

There three cars on display represent the past, present and future of the brand.

To demonstrate how new technologies could change its portfolio, Jaguar is showing off its electric credentials at an event called Jaguar Tech Fest, which is being held near Kings Cross Station in London.

There are three cars on display, which the company says represents the past, present and future of the brand.

For the past, there is the classic 1968 roadster, the E-type – but this is is the E-type Zero, which has been retrofitted with an electric power train and a modern dashboard with all of the instruments that a hybrid requires.

For example, one car on display is the E-Type Zero, in which an electric drivetrain has been retrofitted into the iconic 1968 roadster design. And don’t worry, it is still fast – capable of doing 0-60mph in just 5.5 seconds.

Then there’s the I-Pace – a new purely electric SUV, which is clearly based on the existing petrol-guzzling I-Pace.

And representing the future, Jaguar’s people have come up with the ‘Future Type’, a concept for a fully autonomous electric car – for the world of 2040, where cars are not owned but shared. It envisages a car that will have a voice assistant called Seyer, named after E-type designer Malcolm Seyer.

If you want to check out the cars for yourself, the ‘festival’ is open to the public from the 8th September – until the 10th, and is being held at Central St Martins in Granary Square.
