Airbnb Uses Machine Learning to Foil Parties
Airbnb reports that it will use machine learning technology to crack down on parties this summer. “It’s really important that those spaces are respected and treated with care, and that, you know, people are not showing up and taking advantage of that,” said Airbnb’s Global Director of Corporate and Policy Communications Christopher Nulty.
The company will use the technology to prevent disruptive parties, focusing on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day, looking at how long guests are staying, past rental ratings, distance from home, and the number of guests.
So far, it’s working. The tech is resulting in a 50% reduction in unauthorized parties. In 2023, over those weekends, more than 67,000 people across the U.S., including 950 in Philadelphia, were deterred from booking entire home listings.
If you’ve been flagged but aren’t planning on throwing a party, you can call Airbnb’s customer service line.
In March of this year, indoor security cameras were banned beginning April 30th after guests complained. It looks like machine learning may be just another line of defense.
