Ampere and STMicroelectronics Collaborate to Revolutionize EV Powertrains with SiC Technology
Multi-Year Agreement Ensures Long-Term Supply of SiC Power Modules
Ampere, Renault Group’s electric vehicle (EV) division, and STMicroelectronics, a global leader in semiconductor technologies, have announced an advanced collaboration aimed at boosting efficiency and performance in Ampere’s next-generation electric motors. The partnership, centered around Silicon Carbide (SiC) power modules and an innovative powerbox, represents a significant step forward in EV technology.
The multi-year agreement between STMicroelectronics and Renault Group ensures a reliable supply of SiC power modules starting in 2026, integral to Ampere’s ultra-efficient electric powertrains. The partnership reflects Ampere’s strategy of working closely with upstream partners to design cutting-edge solutions tailored to its EV technologies.
Driving Innovation with Silicon Carbide Power Modules
Silicon Carbide power modules are pivotal in managing and converting electrical energy from an EV’s battery to its motor, significantly impacting the efficiency of the powertrain, battery range, and regenerative energy capabilities. These modules not only enhance an electric car’s performance but also improve driving smoothness and responsiveness.
Ampere and STMicroelectronics collaborated to optimize these power modules within a custom-designed powerbox. This powerbox, a critical component of the inverter, maximizes performance and efficiency for Ampere’s new electric motors.
“This agreement is the result of intensive collaboration with STMicroelectronics. Together, we’ve optimized and secured the supply of key components for our powertrains to deliver high-performance EVs with increased range and faster charging times,” said Philippe Brunet, Senior Vice President of Powertrain and EV Engineering at Ampere. “This partnership perfectly aligns with Ampere’s strategy to master the entire value chain of power electronics for our e-powertrain.”
Revolutionizing Charging and Efficiency
The powerbox developed through this collaboration is designed for optimal performance across Ampere’s EV lineup, supporting both 400-volt battery platforms and advanced 800-volt architectures. The 800-volt system, a key enabler for rapid charging, allows a 10% to 80% charge in under 15 minutes—pushing the boundaries of what EVs can achieve in autonomy and convenience.
Michael Anfang, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing for STMicroelectronics’ EMEA region, emphasized the broader impact of this innovation. “With the optimization of advanced power electronics and our vertically integrated SiC supply chain, we’re supporting Ampere’s strategy for the next generation of electric powertrains. This agreement is another milestone in reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainable mobility.”
Technical Advancements
The powerbox integrates three SiC-based power modules, an excitation module for motor control, and an advanced cooling baseplate to efficiently dissipate heat. This design not only improves performance but simplifies the thermal management system, ensuring optimal size-to-performance ratios for Ampere’s vehicles.
A Shared Vision for Sustainability
Ampere and STMicroelectronics’ collaboration highlights their shared commitment to sustainable mobility. By leveraging cutting-edge semiconductor technology, the partnership aims to set new benchmarks in EV performance while contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions across the automotive supply chain.
This strategic cooperation underscores the importance of integrated supply chains and collaborative innovation in advancing the electrification of the automotive industry.
