Arm Terminates Qualcomm’s License: Snapdragon Chips at Risk

In a major industry shakeup, Arm has terminated Qualcomm’s license to use its architectural intellectual property, threatening Qualcomm’s ability to manufacture its Snapdragon chips. The Snapdragon processors power a significant portion of Android smartphones and other mobile devices, making this a potentially devastating blow to Qualcomm’s business, which generates almost all of its $39 billion annual revenue from these products.

The cancellation stems from Qualcomm’s 2021 acquisition of Nuvia, a chip design startup focused on Arm-based processors. Arm alleges that Qualcomm did not properly renegotiate the terms of Nuvia’s license, violating its agreement with Arm. This dispute escalated into a lawsuit in 2022, and now Arm has issued a 60-day cancellation notice. If no resolution is reached, Qualcomm could be forced to halt production of key products like its Snapdragon X Elite processors used in mobile and automotive applications.

Qualcomm, however, argues that Arm’s move is baseless, accusing Arm of trying to force higher royalties and interfere with Qualcomm’s business. This conflict, which is set to go to trial in December, may significantly impact the tech landscape, particularly for design engineers who rely on Qualcomm’s chips for a wide range of applications.

As the situation unfolds, both companies could still reach a settlement, but the potential disruption to Qualcomm’s chip manufacturing has raised concerns across the semiconductor industry.
