Move over self-driving cars, autonomous tractors are now a thing
Farming may be one of the oldest methods of food generation production out there, but even it has to change with the times. As populations — and technology— grow, farmers are looking for new innovative ways to produce more and more food on the same amount of land.
A company called CNH Industrial has a solution that may find its way onto farms in the near future.
Its autonomous technology would enable integration into existing fleets and provide farmers access to real-time data wherever they are.
The company revealed its concept autonomous tractor which is 100% independent and driverless.
The concept tractors are configured as two distinct versions: the IH Magnum which completely removes the operator from the tractor tasks and the New Holland T8 NHDrive, which allows the operator to maintain some operating flexibility, with traditional human operation for road transport and when performing tasks currently unsuited to automation.
According to the company, either version can be seamlessly integrated into existing fleets, and aside from the driverless technology they use a conventional engine, transmission, chassis and implement couplings.
Take a peek at the fully autonomous tractors in action, filmed in June on a working farm in Kentucky, USA. The company states that the footage was recorded completely live and without CGI enhancements.
