CDE Hybrid Polymer Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors, Standard and Ruggedized
New Yorker Electronics has announced that is now is distributing the full line of Cornell Dubilier Hybrid Polymer Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors in the HZC, HZA, HZC_V and HZA_V series. These hybrid capacitors have the ultra-low ESR characteristics of conductive aluminum polymer capacitors packaged in a V-chip, SMT case with high capacitance and voltage ratings that were previously available only in aluminum electrolytic technology.
The capacitors are a hybrid of liquid electrolytes and solid polymers, giving them high-ripple current capability at high capacitance and voltage ratings. They combine the advantages of aluminum electrolytic and aluminum polymer technology. Therefore, fewer capacitors are required by design engineers to meet the demands of their power conversions.
HZC – Type HZC, Hybrid Polymer Aluminum Electrolytic capacitors have the ultra-low ESR characteristics of conductive aluminum polymer capacitors packaged in a V-chip, SMT case. Capacitance values for type HZC range from 10 to 330µF at voltage ratings from 25 to 63VDC and ripple current values exceeding 2000mA for some of the larger chip sizes. When operated at their rated temperature of 125°C and rated voltage at full ripple current rating, type HZC capacitors have a load life exceeding 4,000 hours.
HZA – Combining the advantages of each technology, type HZA has the ultra-low ESR characteristics of conductive aluminum polymer capacitors packaged in a V-chip, SMT. Capacitance values for type HZA range from 10 to 330µF at voltage ratings from 25 to 80VDC and ripple current values exceeding 2000mA on some of the larger chip sizes. When operated at their rated temperature of 105°C and rated voltage at full ripple current load, type HZA capacitors have an exceedingly long life of 10,000 hours. They possess superior smoothing performance at higher switching frequencies and lower temperatures.
HZC_V / HZA_V – These are ruggedized versions of the original SMT Hybrid Polymer-Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors, now able to withstand continuous vibrations of up to 30 g’s of stress. This rating has been accomplished through electrical and mechanical redesign. Hybrid polymer-aluminum electrolytic capacitors combine the very low ESR and high ripple currents of conductive aluminum polymer capacitors with the higher voltage and capacitance ratings of aluminum electrolytic technology.
Packaged in a compact V-chip, SMT case, the new capacitors are available in two series, the 125°C and the 105°C. Both series have capacitance values up to 330μF and ripple current values of 2 amps RMS or greater, in larger chip sizes. At maximum ratings, HZA_V capacitors have an exceedingly long life of 10,000 hours, with the HZC_V capacitors rated at 4,000 hours. The HZA_V is rated at 25 to 63VDC and 25 to 80VDC on the HZC_V.
With these devices, CDE incorporated three important upgrades for vibration resistance. A support terminal was added to suppress vibration of the molded support base to the PCB, and therefore reduce contact stress. The support base was extended to create a high retention wall structure to better support the capacitor body. In an effort to reduce internal vibration of the capacitor winding, a larger diameter lead wire is used. This is very effective at eliminating internal lead breakage at critical stress points.
The higher vibration rating with these two models provides the benefits of the hybrid polymer-aluminum electrolytic technology to designers of ruggedized products. They are ideal in mechanical systems or for military transportation where the circuitry mounts to the system. Other applications include industrial power conversion, lighting control and automotive applications.
