If you are looking to use USB Power Delivery pipes to power a drive, then there are already several USB-C hard drives available on the market that would meet your needs. There are several USB-C hard drives that perform this function, forgoing the power adapter typically necessary for larger hard drives. However, what happens when that role is reversed?
Western Digital have announced a USB-C G-Drive, called ‘G-Drive USB-C’, which is capable of providing up to 45W of charge over USB-C.
When picturing a dream USB-C desk setup, it tends to involve a 5K monitor that has no need for routers and can potentially act as a hub.
Western Digital wants the focus to be on what’s more important and necessary – 4, 8, or 10TB of files.
If you are new to the USB-C revolution, G-Drive USB-C also comes with a USB-C to USB-A cable in the box, and works over a Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.0, or USB 2.0 interface.
The drives start at $199.95 for the 4TB version and hope to be available this quarter.
