ROHM’s EcoGaN Technology Enhances AI Server Power Efficiency
As the demand for AI computing continues to surge, power efficiency is becoming a critical challenge for data centers. ROHM Semiconductor is addressing this issue with its EcoGaN™ series of 650V GaN HEMTs, now adopted by Murata Power Solutions for AI server power supplies. This integration enables greater power efficiency and miniaturization in Murata’s 5.5kW AI server power supply unit, which is set to enter mass production in 2025.
The Growing Need for Efficient AI Power Supplies
With the rapid expansion of AI, IoT, and augmented reality (AR), global data traffic is increasing at an unprecedented rate. AI-driven workloads require significantly more power than traditional internet applications, amplifying the need for energy-efficient power conversion technologies.
GaN (gallium nitride) devices have emerged as a key solution due to their low ON resistance, high-speed switching capabilities, and reduced power losses. These characteristics allow for higher switching frequencies, which in turn minimizes the size of key components such as inductors, leading to more compact and efficient power supplies.
How ROHM’s EcoGaN Enhances AI Server Power Supplies
By integrating ROHM’s GaN HEMTs, Murata Power Solutions has achieved higher efficiency and power density in its 5.5kW AI server power supply unit. This improvement is driven by several key advantages of ROHM’s EcoGaN technology:
- High-Speed Switching – GaN HEMTs can operate at much higher switching frequencies compared to traditional silicon-based solutions, reducing switching losses and improving overall efficiency.
- Low Parasitic Capacitance & Zero Reverse Recovery – These features help minimize energy losses, allowing power converters to achieve higher efficiency at increased switching speeds.
- Compact TOLL Package for Better Thermal Management – The 650V GaN HEMTs are housed in a high heat dissipation TOLL package, enhancing thermal performance and enabling higher power density in Murata’s AI server power supply designs.
Murata’s front-end power supplies are designed to support redundant operation for improved system reliability while meeting 80+ Titanium and Open Compute efficiency standards. The low-profile 1U design further optimizes space, making these power units well-suited for next-generation GPU servers, storage systems, and high-performance computing applications.
A Step Toward More Sustainable AI Data Centers
As AI workloads continue to grow, power consumption will remain a major concern for data center operators. By adopting ROHM’s EcoGaN technology, Murata Power Solutions is taking a significant step toward reducing energy waste and optimizing power conversion in AI-driven infrastructure.
The collaboration between ROHM and Murata highlights the increasing role of GaN technology in the transition toward more efficient, compact, and sustainable power solutions for high-performance computing.
With mass production of Murata’s 5.5kW AI server power supply units slated for 2025, the integration of ROHM’s GaN HEMTs marks an important milestone in the push for greener, more efficient AI data centers.
