ROHM’s New Chip Resistors Tackle Miniaturization and Performance Challenges
The race for smaller, more efficient electronic components is driving innovation across industries, from automotive to industrial automation. However, engineers face a persistent challenge: how to achieve miniaturization without sacrificing performance or reliability. ROHM Semiconductor has taken on this challenge with the launch of its expanded MCRx family of general-purpose chip resistors.
The Challenge: Miniaturization Without Compromise
As electronic devices shrink and gain more functionality, components must become smaller while maintaining high performance. This is especially critical in electric vehicles (EVs), where systems such as battery management and powertrain control demand compact, heat-resistant components. Industrial automation systems also need high-efficiency parts to support complex machinery. Yet, reducing component size often leads to issues such as overheating, reduced power capacity, and shorter lifespans.
ROHM’s Solution: High-Power, Compact Chip Resistors
ROHM addresses these challenges with two key product lines in the MCRx family:
- MCRS Series (High-Power): This series uses a redesigned internal structure and advanced materials to deliver higher rated power and better temperature performance (TCR) in a smaller package. Engineers can now select from sizes ranging from the ultra-compact 0402 to the larger 2512, allowing for greater design flexibility.
- MCRL Series (Low-Resistance, High-Power): Designed for current detection applications, this series offers low-resistance variants from 0805 to 2512 sizes. Its high power capacity and accuracy make it ideal for power monitoring in automotive and industrial systems.
Built for Long-Term Reliability
The MCRx family is designed for stability and long-term use, meeting the rigorous AEC-Q200 automotive reliability standard. This ensures durability under harsh conditions, such as extreme temperatures in electric vehicles or continuous operation in industrial automation settings. Additionally, ROHM guarantees a stable long-term supply, providing peace of mind for applications with extended lifecycles.
A Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
In response to environmental regulations, ROHM is expanding the series to include completely lead-free MCRE variants and ultra-compact 0201-size resistors capable of withstanding temperatures up to +155°C. These additions support miniaturization without compromising sustainability goals.
Applications Across Industries
The MCRx family is suitable for a wide range of uses, from automotive systems like Battery Management Systems (BMS) and ADAS to industrial robots, factory automation, and consumer electronics such as smartphones and home appliances.
Looking Ahead
With a focus on technological innovation and long-term reliability, ROHM Semiconductor is positioning its MCRx family as a cornerstone for the next generation of electronic designs. As industries continue to push the boundaries of miniaturization and performance, solutions like these will be essential in driving progress without compromise.
