This unmanned robotic hybrid can transform into multiple vehicles

An Estonia-based defense company named Milrem has just unveiled a first-of-its-kind modular ground vehicle that can transform to provide numerous capabilities.

The hybrid, named THeMIS (Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System), was revealed this week at the Singapore Airshow 2016.

The multi-mission vehicle platform was designed to assist and replace soldiers that need to perform complex and potentially hazardous missions while on the battlefield.

THeMIS is equipped with a remote weapon station and does not perform like traditional unmanned ground vehicles. Different kinds of superstructures can be mounted and integrated onto the middle platforms to make it suitable for different kinds of missions like rescue, transport, and reconnaissance.

THeMIS’ flexibility and versatile nature could increase efficiency, as well as reduce costs of unmanned systems by making everything more compact.

“Unmanned systems will play a significant role in the development of military capabilities in future. Within the next 10 years, we will see smart ground systems complimenting the human troops during joint missions. We are excited to be in cooperation with ST Kinetics for THeMIS ADDER, and we’re sure that this universal UGV concept will effectively supplement defence capabilities on a battalion level,” said Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem.

Milrem has already conducted successful initial running tests for the THeMIS prototype and will bring it into production by end of year.
