One day the threads on your clothing may be able to change color right before your eyes thanks to a project underway at the University of California Berkeley. The project, called Ebb, involves coating conductive threats with thermochromic pigments. One exposed to electricity, the threads are able to change color.
The thermochromic pigments change colors slowly, to create calming animations. The team decided on the name “Ebb” for the project because it is a reflection of this slowness in the way it creates images of the ebb and flow of the tides instead of the rapid-fire changes we typically associate with light emitting information displays.
The team believes Ebb is a potential approach for displaying information on fabrics.
Watch the fabric change colors right before your eyes.
