You can install a retro video arcade in your home for $1,500

While the masses are out purchasing Nintendo and Playstation game consoles, video game enthusiasts can be at home playing retro video arcade games.

Polycade is the brainchild of three video-game lovers, who also happen to be the children of Atari founder Nolan Bushell. Together they  are trying to evolve the traditional arcade and bring back some of its wonder.

While arcade machines are typically large, heavy, and difficult to fix, the Polycade team decided to create a slimmer and lighter version that could house thousands of games.

Polycade features a 4-directional joystick for classic titles, two 8-directional joysticks for multiplayer, includes over 90 games to start (including classics like Pac Man and Dig Dug), and is about a third of the size of a standard arcade machine.

The Polycade comes equipped with a 28″ Insignia LED TV with a 60Hz refresh rate and runs on a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. Included with the system is an 8g SD card pre-loaded with software and is capable of holding thousands of games.

For those interested in adding more games to the arcade system, the trio has tested Atari 800, Atari 2600, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color, Game Gear, Sega Genesis, and Nintendo Entertainment Systems and they are all compatible.

The Polycade team launched a Kickstarter campaign for the arcade system where anyone interested can purchase one at an early bird price of $1,500.  Expected delivery March 2016.
